At around 1700 miles, California is by far the longest section of the PCT. The variation in scenery and vegetation is dramatic, from arid desert complete with huge cacti in southern California to the bare mountains and alpine meadows of the Sierra Nevada, and on to the forests of northern California. Each type of environment brought its own challenges in terms of wildlife, terrain and resupply of food and water.
